Today, Prince William was given a tour of Notpla by co-founders Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslier to learn more about their progress since winning The 2022 Earthshot Prize.
While there, the Prince was able to get hands-on with some of Notpla’s latest innovative products: Notpla Rigid, an alternative to disposable rigid plastic items, and Notpla Ooho, an edible liquid bubble made of seaweed used to hydrate athletes.
Winning The Earthshot Prize last December and being awarded the £1 million prize has allowed Notpla to really scale up. In fact, within just one month of winning, they had already increased commercial inbounds by 40%.
They’ve since been able to add ten new team members and invest in key injection moulding technology that will help boost production even further. More recently, Notpla have supplied their seaweed-coated packaging to major food distributors Bidfood UK and Bunzl, as well as expanded their partnership with Just Eat Takeaway to eight European countries.
A new product, Notpla Paper (made from seaweed of course) is now being distributed with international paper distributor, G. F. Smith, while a fortnight ago 25,000 Oohos, Notpla’s plastic-free edible bubble, hydrated runners at Sweden’s Göteborgsvarvet, one of the biggest half-marathons in the world.
The team are also allocating further funding to the industrialisation and launch of other innovations including flexible, seaweed-based films that can be used for packaging dry food, cosmetic and home care products without plastic.
This success hasn’t gone unnoticed either, as the start-up has received strong interest from investors around the world.
Tailored support secured by The Earthshot Prize from renowned lawyers Herbert Smith Freehills and global consultancy Deloitte, is helping Notpla prepare for a significant new round of funding that will support their efforts to launch sustainable products into the United States market.
So much has been achieved in just a few short months and there is undoubtedly still plenty more to come from Notpla.
Everyone at The Earthshot Prize is so proud to support them as they continue to bring their incredible innovation to the world and make packaging disappear.
