MiAlgae to Bring Fish-free Omega-3 Ingredients to Pet Food

2024 Finalist, MiAlgae, has announced a new partnership with fresh dog food provider Butternut Box to introduce a fish-free Omega 3 ingredient into pet food for the first time.

By using their patented fermentation process to grow Omega-3-rich microalgae from Scotch whisky by-products, MiAlgae provides a direct alternative to the 16 million tonnes of wild fish caught annually just for their oil.

This new partnership could be an important tipping point for the global pet food industry. By proving that we can feed our pets, and ourselves, without emptying the seas, MiAlgae is leading the shift towards sustainable, ocean-friendly ingredients. Keeping more fish in the sea, and more dogs well fed!

High Ambition Coalition Helps Ghana Protect 700 km² of Marine Habitat

Ghana has announced it will create its first-ever Marine Protected Area, supported by funding from The High Ambition Coalition for People and Nature’s Rapid Deployment Fund – an initiative powered by prize money received as Winners of The Earthshot Prize in 2024.

Marine Protected Areas are one of the most powerful ways we can revive our oceans. This new 700 km2 area around the Greater Cape Three Points peninsula in Ghana will ensure important breeding grounds for fish are safeguarded, as well as vital mangrove, wetland and seabed ecosystems.

HAC’s Rapid Deployment Fund provides small-scale grants to developing countries to help them fast-track their 30×30 goals. With other Rapid Deployment Fund projects in progress in Kenya and The Maldives, HAC will be opening their second round of applications later this year.

re.green Wins 40-year Contract to Restore Native Amazonian Forests

2025 Earthshot Prize Winner re.green has been awarded an historic 40-year contract by the Brazilian government to lead the restoration of public land in the Amazon.

This first-of-its-kind agreement will restore 145,000 acres within the Bom Futuro National Forest. It is the first time protected land has been specifically set aside for reforestation backed by carbon financing.

The project will see re.green bringing the forest back to life by planting vast numbers of native Amazon species, while also creating a long-term income stream for the region through the sale of verified carbon credits.

This self-sustaining model shows that restoring the Amazon is more valuable than destroying it.

Coastal 500 Hits Their 500-leader Goal in a Huge Boost for Ocean Protection

2023 Finalist, Coastal 500, have officially passed their goal of uniting 500 mayors and local leaders around the world – a huge milestone for community-led ocean action.

Together, these leaders from over 2,000 communities are helping to safeguard nearly 100,000 square kilometres of coastal and marine ecosystems. Their work supports nearly 4 million people worldwide. By strengthening local laws and securing vital funding, they are driving the progress needed to protect our oceans while also building stronger, more resilient communities.

This moment marks the start of an ambitious new phase for the network. By scaling their impact to even more shorelines, Coastal 500 are demonstrating that one of the most effective ways to Revive Our Oceans is from the shoreline up.
