M. Sanjayan

M. Sanjayan is currently a Distinguished Professor of Practice at Arizona State University. Previously, he served as CEO of Conservation International, joining the organisation in 2014 as Executive Vice President and operating as CEO from 2017 to 2025.
During his tenure, he led two landmark capital campaigns totalling $2.7 billion, advanced critical scientific tools like the irrecoverable carbon atlas, and fostered global partnerships for forest restoration. He also spearheaded a blue carbon project in Colombia and helped launch the Blue Nature Alliance, aiming to protect 18 million sq. km of ocean. Previously, Sanjayan was lead scientist at The Nature Conservancy.
Born in Sri Lanka and raised in West Africa, he brings a global perspective to his work and has hosted award-winning documentaries for PBS, BBC, National Geographic, Discovery, Showtime, and Vox Media. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Oregon and a PhD in conservation biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He was also recognised on the inaugural TIME100 Climate list in 2023.
