Earthshot Week 2024 might be over, but its impact will be felt for months and years to come.
We revealed our five Winners, spotlighted groundbreaking innovation from across Africa, and inspired the next generation of climate leaders – and, of course, there were all the breathtaking performances, incredible guests, and spectacular shows.
So, as we start looking to the future, let’s take a second to relive some of the best moments of Earthshot Week 2024.
Our 15 Finalists for 2024 kicked off their Fellowship programme with a five-day retreat in Cape Town. With the support of partners and experts from around the world, they discovered how to unlock their growth and tackle some of their biggest challenges.
“It’s been an amazing few days with some ridiculously amazing people,” said Douglas Martin, Founder and Managing Director, MiAlgae. “I think all the solutions here are phenomenal… There’s nothing like this.”
Big ideas need a big platform.
As part of a series of events across Cape Town hosted by Earthshot Prize Ambassador, Nomzamo Mbatha, we invited leading experts in sustainability and innovation to Earthshot+ for a day of bold conversation and impactful collaboration.
Global influencers including Prince William, Earthshot Prize Ambassador Robert Irwin and Rita El Zaghloul from 2024 Earthshot Prize Winner HAC, took to the stage to discuss how we overcome some of the biggest challenges faced by all sectors.
With the world watching, we were proud to announce that support for our Earthshot Prize alumni has reached an incredible £86M so far.
In partnership with Common Purpose, and made possible by DP World and Paul G. Allen Family Foundation we brought together 120 young people from across Africa and Asia to launch the first Earthshot Week Climate Youth Leadership Programme.
This series of masterclasses and events was designed to equip the next generation of climate leaders with the skills they need to make impactful change.
The inspiring young people who took part shook up the city with their brilliant ideas and bold ambitions to show kindness to Earth and contribute to a world that’s fairer, more sustainable, and more equitable.
The dazzling Ebuka and Nomuzi Mabena (aka Moozlie) rolled out the Green Carpet for the biggest names in environmentalism all streamed live on our YouTube channel for the very first time.
And who can forget Ndlovu Youth Choir’s impromptu performance of the South African national anthem as Moozlie danced in the way only she can!
An epic night needs an epic start.
From the heights of Table Mountain, Lebo M performed his iconic ‘Circle of Life’ from the Lion King. Our jaws dropped as he then came onto the stage in The Earthshot Dome singing live with the Ndlovu Youth Choir.
Spine-tingling stuff.
The big moment. This is what we were all there for. Our Winners were announced by a roll call of global and African stars:
To end the night, our Founder Prince William took to the stage to celebrate African innovation and rally audiences worldwide to act for our planet.
“We want to make this the decade in which we transform the world for good, one solution at a time, from the ground up. Africa is a hub of creativity and innovation that will solve our planet’s toughest environmental challenges.”
And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the Ndlovu Youth Choir returned to the stage and brought the house down with Toto’s ‘Africa’.
Set against Cape Town’s iconic Seapoint Sea Wall, we spotlighted the brilliance of some of Africa’s most innovative thinkers in an exhibition of photography.
Made in partnership with local creators, each picture told a unique story – and by scanning a QR code, visitors could discover photos on our Africa Innovates website.
In true South African style, we had to have one last party to celebrate the Winners, incredible innovations, and all the ways we’re optimistic about the future.
The iconic Ggoldie brought the tunes, the moves and the energy to make this an Earthshot Week we won’t ever forget. The jol was a chance for everyone to let off some steam, ready to double down on repairing our planet.
As Cape Town returns to its rhythm, the work of the Earthshot community continues at speed with the announcement of £6 million of new partnerships to ensure climate creativity flourishes across Africa.
It’s clear that the solutions, partnerships, and ideas sparked during this extraordinary week will ripple far beyond 2024.
Alongside our phenomenal partners and wider Earthshot family, we’re not just imagining a better future—we’re building it, moment by moment.
