Since 1987, Conservation International has worked to spotlight and secure the critical benefits that nature provides to humanity. Combining innovations in science, policy and finance, they have helped protect more than 6 million square kilometers of land and sea across more than 70 countries.
On becoming a Global Alliance Partner in 2020, Conservation International have been part of The Earthshot Prize journey from the beginning. We are therefore extremely proud that they are expanding their commitment further and working alongside us as strategic partner for The Earthshot Prize Awards 2023 in Singapore.
Besides Singapore, Conservation International has programs in Cambodia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, the Philippines and the Pacific Islands. Their innovative work in the region includes a facility that scales nature-based conservation solutions for land-based ecosystems and helps marine conservation and fishery organisations work together better.
In 2022, Conservation International launched the International Blue Carbon Institute (IBCI) in Singapore. The IBCI focuses on supporting Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands in realizing their immense “blue carbon” potential. Southeast Asia is home to more than one-third of the world’s mangrove forests, and the Institute works with national governments to integrate blue carbon into climate change mitigation policies at international, regional and local levels. In addition, it will expand education for practitioners, policymakers and communities to access the latest resources on blue carbon projects.

The IBCI is a great example of the many ways Singapore plays a leadership role in issues of sustainability and conservation in Southeast Asia and across the Asia-Pacific. It has set ambitious climate targets and is adopting a whole-of-nation approach to empowering industries, people and communities in a green transition. All of this contributes to making Singapore the perfect location to showcase the innovative solutions of our 2023 Finalists.
Another key focus of Conservation International in Singapore is empowering and inspiring the country’s youth to take action to protect nature. As its future leaders and decision-makers, young people have a unique opportunity to shape Singapore’s environmental policies and practices. With the world’s eyes on the Awards in November, we hope that The Earthshot Prize will help amplify this incredible youth work across Southeast Asia.
